Ritual guides to Hajj 2013Ihram For Men & Women

Ihram: As for the rituals, first of all it is essential for the devotees to be in the state of Ihram, which is the state of purification. It requires the Muslims to take proper bathe as per the Islamic way and then wear the white garment, called as Ihram that comprises:

  • Rida: The white cloth’s upper portion
  • Izar: The white cloth’s lower portion

Declaring the intention : After wearing Ihram, people recite Talbiyah verbally, which expresses their intention to start performing Hajj.  They keep reciting the prayer during the entire pilgrimage in the wake of purifying themselves from mundane possessions. Followed by the declaration, the devotees conform to the fact that will abide by certain prohibitions during Hajj, such as refraining from sexual activities, avoiding haircuts, covering head, using perfume, wearing sewn clothes, etc.

How to do TawafTawaf : On the first day of Hajj, Muslims perform Tawaf, which is the circumambulation of the Holy Kaaba. Each pilgrim walks around the Kaaba seven times, in counter clock-wise direction. In between, they also kiss Al Hajar Al Aswad, the black stone set by Prophet Mohammad himself into the wall of Kaaba. If due to crowd, people do not get the chance to kiss the stone, they can point their right hand to the stone at each of the circuit.

After Tawaf : Once done with the Tawaf, the pilgrims offer prayers in a mosque named Muqaam Ibrahim, close to Kaaba. On the very same day, people move to the hills of Safa and Marwah. Here they move to and forth between the two hills seven times and re-enact the scene where Hajar, Abraham’s (AS) wife, searched for water to quench the thirst of her son Ismael.

Visiting Mina, Arafat and later stages : The very next morning, pilgrims leave for Mina where they engage themselves in the prayers throughout the night. On the ninth day, they leave for Mt Arafat where they spend the whole day reciting the Holy Quran, close to the hill where Prophet Mohammad delivered his last speech.

Eid Al Adha : With the sunset, they move to Muzdalifah, where they spend the night sleeping under the open sky. In the morning they collect stones to throw on the Devil as their next ritual, Ramy al-Jamarat, which they perform during their return to Mina. The Hajj finally reaches the day of Eid al Adha, where they sacrifice animal and follow subsequent rituals, namely Tawaf Al-Ifaadah, Tawaf al-Wida and Journey to Medina, which is optional.
